Ukraine sees foodstuff price hikes in Q1

Ukraine's Ministry for Development of Economy, Trade and Agriculture says prices of foods and non-alcoholic beverages in January-March 2020 (Q1) grew by 2.6%, while those of alcoholic beverages and tobacco rose by 12.3% year-over-year (y-o-y).

In particular, bread went up in price by 8.2%, pasta by 2.6%, meat by 2.4%, fish by 2.7%, and sugar by 1.6%, according to the ministry's data of consumer price index monitoring.

Over the period under review, prices of milk increased by 5.9%, while those of cheese, cottage cheese, and creamery butter climbed by 6.1% each.

Fruit prices soared by 13.3%, whereas vegetable prices tumbled by almost 13%. Vegetable oil fell in price by 2%, the report said.

Eggs in Q1 dropped in price the most, that is by 25.2%.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukrainian Minister for Development of Economy, Trade and Agriculture Ihor Petrashko had said the Cabinet of Ministers planned to introduce state regulation of prices of 10 food staples to ensure food security in the country amid the coronavirus quarantine. The list includes flour, sugar, pasta, milk, eggs, bread, poultry, creamery butter, buckwheat, and mineral water.
