U.S. welcomes Ukraine's energy reforms

The United States welcomes the progress Ukraine made in reforming its energy sector, according to discussions at the fifth annual Energy Security Dialogue chaired by the U.S. Department of State's Special Envoy for International Energy Affairs Amos Hochstein and Ukraine's Energy Minister Volodymyr Demchyshyn in Washington D.C. on July 14, the U.S. Department of State said in a statement.

"The United States officials applauded Ukraine's energy sector reforms to date and committed to working with Ukraine and international partners to further strengthen reform efforts and Ukraine's energy security," the statement reads.

The parties discussed Ukraine's progress in energy sector reforms as well as the critical need to ensure security of natural gas supplies through the diversification of sources and routes. They also discussed U.S. assistance to Ukraine's energy sector, domestic gas and electricity production, and investment climate, according to the statement.

The United States assured it would "strongly support Ukraine's efforts to develop its domestic energy production and diversify sources of supply."

The two sides agreed to continue ongoing, productive dialogue on energy issues.
