Ukraine consumes 10% less electricity

The Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine reports that power consumption in the industrial sector over eight months has declined by 18.9% to 33.6 billion kW/h.

The volume of power consumption by households was down 4.8% to 24.6 billion kW/h, in the utilities sector - down by 10.1%, to 10 billion kW/h, in the transportation sector – down by 9.6%, to 4.5 billion kW/h, and in the agricultural sector – down by 8.4% to 2.2 billion kW/h.

According to the report, power generation in January-August declined by 14.3%, to 104.6 billion kW/h. Nuclear power plants account for 55% of the total power generation in the country (46% - for 8 months of 2014), and thermal power plants - 36%.

In December, 2014, Ukraine experienced rolling blackouts associated with a deficit of coal in the TPP storages due to the hostilities in Donbas, where most of the mines are located.
