Rye yield in Ukraine this year 20% lower than domestic demand – experts

The gross yield of rye in Ukraine this year has been 399,100 tonnes, which was 20% down on the planned consumption set at 500,000 tonnes, and this is lower than domestic demand even if ending stocks of 98,000 tonnes are taken into account, according to the press service of the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club (UCAB).

"According to UCAB experts, in 2015-2016 marketing year there might be a shortage of rye in Ukraine. Indicators of the gross yield of this crop this year amounted to 399,100 tonnes, which is 16.5% less than last year. Consumption of rye on the internal market during the marketing year constitutes around 500,000 tonnes, and considering the transitional balances are at the level of 98,000 tonnes, the volume of aggregate supplies onto the market will be 497,000 tonnes," the press services said.

The Ukrainian Agribusiness Club forecasts there will be a rye deficit in the 2015-2016 marketing year. "The key factors that influence the situation on the market are public attitudes inside the country and dynamics of exports. Moreover supplies of this crop abroad vary greatly each year. For example, last marketing year the volume of rye exports amounted to 21,900 tonnes, whereas in the 2013-2014 marketing year Ukraine exported 50,900 tonnes," it said.

In general, the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club said Ukraine is seeing an output downward trend because of low profitability of rye production and unfavorable prices on the market.
