Ukraine imports coal worth $1.25 bln since year's start

Ukraine's imports of coal and anthracite totaled $1.25 billion in January-September of 2015, according to the State Fiscal Service.

According to the available data, major suppliers of coal to Ukraine in the reviewed period were Russia, the U.S. and Australia.

In the first nine months of this year, coal imports from Russia amounted to $567.388 million, while those from the U.S. - $328.507 million. Imports from Australia amounted to $95.944 million. Imports from other countries totaled $257.782 million.

UNIAN memo. Ukraine began experiencing an acute shortage of thermal coal in the summer of 2014, when as a result of military operations, it completely lost control over part of Donbas, where the majority of the mines are located.

About 50% of Ukraine-produced electricity is generated by nuclear power plants, the rest is produced by thermal power plants burning natural gas and coal, as well as by hydroelectric power plants and "green" energy.

In 2014, Ukraine imported coal and anthracite worth $1.773 billion.
