Energy Ministry to decide on "last resort gas supplier" in month

The Government has ordered Ukraine's Ministry of Energy and Coal Mining to hold a tender within a month to decide on the "last resort gas supplier," as provided by the law "On natural gas market," which came into force on October 1.

The relevant decision is enshrined in the government decree of September 30, 2015, published in the government's Uryadoviy Kurier newspaper on October 15.

According to the law "On natural gas market," the "last resort supplier" is a special category of natural gas supplier (certified supplier), which has the right to supply natural gas in case of certain cases, such as bankruptcy, cancellation or suspension of the license of another supplier.

As UNIAN reported earlier, on October 1, NJSC Naftogaz Ukrainy, the largest Ukrainian state energy holding, lost its monopoly both for the supplies and the sale of natural gas due to the entry into force of a new law on the natural gas market.

"In fact, we are building a fully European non-monopolized system of the natural gas market, when the supplier may personally determine to whom and where to sell, and when the buyer may personally decide from whom he wishes to buy," Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said.
