Westinghouse advances energy efficiency and security in Ukraine

The Ukrainian officials supported a comprehensive program of U.S. Westinghouse Electric Company to implement efficiency and safety improvements to the Ukrainian nuclear fleet, which provides significant energy supply and security for Ukraine, the company reported in its statement, BusinessWire reported.

"Ukraine relies on nuclear energy for more than 50% of its power requirements today. Success in this program will increase Ukraine's domestic energy output while enhancing security and safety, providing for Ukrainians' electricity needs and the country's energy integration into the European energy markets' trading capabilities," Westinghouse Electric Company President and Chief Executive Officer Danny Roderick stated, according to the report

Roderick met with President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, in addition to several cabinet members, as part of an official delegation led by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker on October 26.  

As UNIAN reported earlier, in an effort to diversify nuclear fuel purchases for Ukrainian nuclear power plants (NPPs), Ukraine plans to buy more than a third of fuel from Westinghouse in 2016, while this year Ukraine has been purchasing almost the entire amount from Russia.

National nuclear generating company Energoatom has accepted the offer of the Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology for services to accompany the expansion of the exploitation of Westinghouse nuclear fuel assemblies at Zaporizhia NPP. The cost of the offer is UAH 16.85 million
