Ukraine able to ensure gas supplies whatever Russia does: Naftogaz chief

Ukraine will be able to meet its demand for natural gas this winter using gas shipments from Europe even if Russia decides to cut off gas supplies to Ukraine, Naftogaz Ukrainy CEO Andriy Kobolev wrote on Facebook.

"We will be able to provide for Ukraine's gas needs from the European direction this winter. And next winter. And any other [winter]. Diversification and the gas market really yield results," Kobolev wrote, adding  he had received numerous questions from different people, asking what would happen if Ukraine's gas supplies were cut off by the Russian Federation.

"Diversification and the gas market really work," he wrote. "Enjoy."

Earlier, Ukrainian Minister of Energy and Coal Industry Volodymyr Demchyshyn said that Ukraine had no plans to buy additional volumes of gas from Russia for the heating season, because the existing stocks of 16.5 billion cubic meters would be sufficient given the current favorable weather and reduction in gas consumption by an average of 17 -19%.
