Ukrainian parliament lifts import duty on electric vehicles

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has adopted a law, freeing imports of vehicles equipped with electric engines from import duties.

A total of 233 deputies, with the required minimum of 226 votes, have voted for the adoption of draft law No. 1674 "On Amendments to the Law of Ukraine "On the Customs Tariff of Ukraine" concerning the abolition of import duty on electric vehicles."

Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Taxation and Customs Policy Nina Yuzhanina stated, when presenting the bill to the parliament, that amendments had been introduced to the bill before its second reading that do not provide possibility of lifting import duties on hybrid electric vehicles. She also noted that the law does not apply to electric motor vehicles used for passenger transportation, particularly taxis.

As UNIAN reported earlier, on May 21, 2015, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the first reading of draft law No. 1674, after three votes, with 242 MPs voting in favor, with the required minimum of 226 votes.

On May 21, the Ukrainian parliament adopted the first reading of bill No. 1912, providing temporary exemption, until January 1, 2020, from value added tax and excise tax on import and deliveries to the customs territory of Ukraine of vehicles equipped with electric engines.

According to the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, the adoption of bill No. 1674, as well as bill No. 1912 will help reduce the cost of electric vehicles by 28%. In this regard, the Economic Ministry has urged the parliament to adopt the relevant draft laws.
