Brussels not concerned with Ukraine halting purchases of Russian gas

The European Commission is not concerned with the fact that Ukraine had stopped buying Russian natural gas, while the supply of gas to the European Union is carried out in regular mode, European Commission spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen said at a briefing in Brussels on Wednesday, according to an UNIAN correspondent.

According to her, the European Commission is aware of relevant media reports. "We are not particularly concerned about the gas flows from Russia to Ukraine at the moment,” said the EC official.

“The gas flows to EU are normal,” said Itkonen.

The EC official also said that there is “around 16.5 bcm” of gas in the Ukrainian underground storage facilities today, which is approximately the same amount it was last year. "And Ukraine currently uses own production as well as Slovakian gas flows and the weather conditions in November have been rather mild so far leading to below average consumption," she said.

He stressed that this decision was made because "the price offers of our European partners are much better." "A total consumption of gas in Ukraine has already been reduced by 20%," said Yatsenyuk.

In turn, Naftogaz stressed that they will continue to transport Russian gas to European consumers, while fully respecting the contractual terms.
