Government to submit mortgage restructuring bill for Rada consideration

The Ukrainian government intends to submit a draft law "On restructuring of liabilities of Ukrainian citizens under foreign currency loans obtained to purchase a single housing unit (mortgages)" for consideration of the Verkhovna Rada on Monday, said Deputy Finance Minister Ihor Umansky when reporting to the Ukrainian parliament.

The deputy minister noted the bill had been already considered and approved by the Cabinet at its last meeting.

"Now the work is being finished regarding its [the bill's] improvement, and as far as I know, it is going to be registered on Monday," Umansky said.

According to him, the bill envisages mortgage restructuring opportunities for about 38,000 Ukrainian families.

The bill was drafted by the Ministry of Finance jointly with the National Bank of Ukraine and the Independent Association of Ukrainian Banks.

According to the Finance Ministry, the mentioned bills will allow Ukrainians to restructure foreign currency mortgage debts to the tune of UAH 20 billion under new conditions, while the total amount of debt restructuring for businesses subject to the restructuring plan is about UAH 200 billion, experts estimate.
