Ukraine air traffic service set to enhance flight safety over Black Sea

Ukrainian's State Air Traffic Services Enterprise (UkSATSE) intends to improve its ground-based communications, navigation and surveillance networks in the Odesa flight information zone in order to step up flight safety over the Black Sea area, according to the Ukrainian Infrastructure Ministry's press service.

In this regard, UkSATSE intends to establish a new monopulse secondary surveillance radar in Skadovsk.

As reported, UkSATSE signed a contract with Indra company, a leading Spanish manufacturer of air navigation equipment, which had won an open tender.

The new radar that will soon replace the existing equipment in the area will enable to significantly improve the airspace surveillance system in the Black Sea area, where the air traffic regulation falls under Ukraine's responsibility.

By doing so, UkSATSE improves the reliability of the national air navigation service provider and the ability to ensure safety of air traffic in the international airspace. This is said to facilitate a gradual recovery of flying intensity in the area and will have a positive impact on the efficiency of civil aviation worldwide.

According to UkSATSE, the cooperation with Indra company has lasted since 2000. Spain-produced automated air traffic control systems and advanced radars have been successfully installed and operating in Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv regions.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Ukraine's key creditor, resumed cooperation with UkSATSE on a EUR 41.2 million loan to implement projects that aim at enhancing the safety of air traffic. The relevant agreement was signed in 2012, but has not yet been implemented.

In January-September of 2015, UkSATSE saw a 37% reduction in the number of flights under its service, to 186,300, as compared to 296,700 flights for the same period in 2014.

UkSATSE is tasked with providing efficient and safe air navigation services in the Ukrainian airspace and in the airspace over the high seas where the responsibility for providing air traffic services is delegated to Ukraine under the international agreements, subject to the current and future airspace users' needs and operational conditions in the air traffic market both in Ukraine and European airspace.
