Russian embargo covers Ukrainian agricultural products, raw materials, foodstuffs

The Russian government issued a resolution on introduction of an embargo against Ukraine from January 1, 2016.

Russia has imposed a ban, which will take effect on January 1, 2016, on imports of agricultural products, raw materials and foodstuffs of the Ukrainian origin, according to the Cabinet resolution published on the official government website.

“From 1 January 2016 a ban shall be imposed on the import to the Russian Federation of agricultural products, raw materials and foodstuffs, the country of origin of which is Ukraine," reads the explanatory note to the resolution.

The Russian government has also noted that "the decision is aimed at distribution of special retaliatory economic measures against Ukraine."

In addition, from January 1, a free trade regime with Russia will be abolished. Therefore, instead of a zero customs rate, there will be an average of a 6% rate on the Ukrainian goods entering the territory of the Russian Federation.

UNIAN memo. According to the Ukrainian Cabinet, the Ukrainian farmers in 2015 substantially diversified markets for their products and reduced the share of agricultural exports to Russia down to 2%. The government stressed that such diversification of food markets will help overcome the Russian embargo.
