Russia bans Ukrainian pork from Jan 1

Russia's Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance Rosselkhoznadzor has temporarily banned shipments of products from Ukrainian pig farms to Russia as of January 1, 2016.

The ban covers the import of live pigs, their genetic materials, pork and raw pork products, meat of wild boar, such raw materials as horn, hoof, leather and raw casings, bristles, and finished products containing pork. Banned will be hunting trophies and all kinds of fodder and feed additives for pigs.

Rosselkhoznadzor said the causes behind the decision are "African swine fever (ASF) cases in Ukraine, which indicate the spread of the virus among wild animal population, as well as the failure to provide comprehensive information about the ASF situation in various regions of Ukraine."

As UNIAN reported earlier, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev announced that after the economic provisions of the Association Agreement between the European Union and Ukraine became effective, Russia would introduce as of January 1, 2016, an embargo on food products from Ukraine. The Russian embargo covers Ukrainian farm produce, raw materials and food.
