"We together with [Canada's Minister of International Trade Chrystia Freeland] announced the launch of a large-scale project for technical assistance, which concerns an increase in exports from Ukraine to Canada and facilitation of trade in keeping with a free trade area [agreement], and attraction of more investment in Ukraine," she said at a briefing in Kyiv.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Canada will provide technical assistance for modernization of the Ukrainian industry under an agreement on a free trade area. Negotiations on the agreement were completed on July 14.

Mykolska said that Ukraine had managed to defend the asymmetric liberalization of commodity markets to safeguard domestic producers in the vulnerable sectors. So, after the agreement becomes effective, the Canadian side will immediately open up to 98% of the market, while Ukraine will cancel tariffs for almost 80% of goods of Canadian exports, to be followed by the abolition of the remaining tariffs in the next three, five and seven years. In addition, quotas were set for certain Canadian goods with the simultaneous withdrawal of certain items from the agreement.
