Russian ruble crashes below RUB 80 to dollar

The dollar exchange rate reached RUB 80 to the dollar on the Moscow Stock Exchange during the trading session on January 20. By 11:10 Moscow time, the U.S. currency transactions were made at RUB 79.99 to the dollar, according to Russian online business magazine Slon.

"By the same time, the euro exchange rate settled above RUB 87.5 to the euro. Both currencies continue to update highs against the ruble for more than a year – starting December 2014," the report says.

It is noted that the Russian ruble began this week with a drop against the dollar and the euro due to plunging oil prices ahead of data release on the U.S. hydrocarbon reserves.
