Ukraine wants to resume power exports to Belarus and Moldova

Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Energy and Coal Industry Oleksandr Svetelyk announces that Ukraine plans to resume power exports to Belarus and Moldova in the second quarter of 2016 after a halt in 2014 due to an acute shortage of thermal coal for the needs of Ukrainian thermal power plants.

"Starting from the second quarter we will call auctions to sell electricity for export. We will sell it for Belarus and Moldova," Svetelyk said, adding that the Energy Ministry is already in talks with Ukrainian energy market players to resume power exports.

As UNIAN reported earlier, earnings in foreign currency from power exports in 2015 decreased by 68.8% to $150.1 million, from $487.2 million in 2014.

Power exports are carried out by such companies in Ukraine as Rinat Akhmetov's DTEK, Donbasenergo, PJSC Zakarpatiaoblenergo and ERA Trading.

Currently, Ukraine ships electricity to the EU countries alone.
