Ukraine opts for German engines in armored vehicles instead of Russian ones

Ukraine's major state-owned military hardware manufacturer Ukroboronprom has decided to use NATO-type Deutz engines in domestic samples of armored vehicles instead of Russian-made ones whose deliveries were terminated as Russia launched military aggression in Donbas, the company's press service reported.

After the completion of tests of modern Ukrainian BTR-4 armored personnel carriers adapted to German Deutz engines, the hardware was put into service, according to the report.

Deutz engines are powerful, reliable, and what is very important in the war context, work much quieter than Russian engines, which have been installed on Ukrainian armored vehicles before. It is emphasized that the Ukrainian military will receive the best samples of the domestically produced military equipment adapted to NATO standards, the press service quoted Ukroboronprom CEO Roman Romanov as saying.

It is reported the company has signed a contract with Deutz AG for the supply of these engines. The volume of deliveries was not specified.

The new engines will be installed on BTR-3, BTR-4 and "Dozor-B" armored vehicles. Prior to that, the mentioned vehicles used obsolete Russian-made engines, according to the press service.

What is more, Deutz AG offered a special price for the batch of engines supplied to Ukraine. The funds to be saved, estimated at UAH 25 million, will be funneled into the manufacture of new equipment for the Ukrainian army.

As UNIAN reported earlier, in late October, Deutz AG supplied 16 Deutz diesel engines to Ukroboronprom. The company repeatedly noted that the mass production of "Dozor" armored vehicles had been delayed due to lack of appropriate licensing documentation from Germany, making it impossible to deliver Deutz engines to Ukraine.

UNIAN memo. State-run conglomerate Ukroboronprom was established in 2010 to ensure effective operations and management of state-owned business entities that develop, manufacture, sell, repair, modernize and scrap weapons, military and special equipment and ammunition, and participate in the military-technical cooperation.
