Ukraine to borrow almost UAH 218 bln in 2016 to prop up budget

Ukraine's Finance Ministry plans to borrow UAH 217.998 billion both on the domestic and foreign markets in 2016 to finance the national budget, according to a state debt management program for 2016, posted on the ministry's website.

"Borrowings on the domestic market will total UAH 98.444 billion, which is 45.2% of the total borrowings. Borrowings on the foreign market, including those of the special fund of the national budget of Ukraine, will be UAH 119.554 billion, or 54.8%," the document said.

Under the program, loans worth UAH 15 billion in the equivalent will be taken by the ministry in 2016 for the implementation of investment projects. These are the loans that are to be funneled into the special fund of the national budget. Among them are a loan worth UAH 5.111 billion from the World Bank and a loan worth UAH 4.344 billion from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. What is more, Ukraine expects to borrow UAH 4.297 billion from the European Investment Bank, UAH 1.218 billion from Germany's KfW, UAH 10 billion from the government of Poland, and UAH 21 million from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukraine expects about $10 billion from international financial organizations in 2016. This sum includes $5.8 billion from the International Monetary Fund and over $1.5 billion from the World Bank under new loan programs.

The total sum of state and government-guaranteed debt of Ukraine as of December 31, 2015, was $65.488 billion, which was 6.19%, or $4.324 billion, down on the beginning of 2015.
