Ukraine launches grain sowing campaign

Ukraine has launched a spring grain sowing campaign, in particular, Odesa region has sown early grain crops on 1,700 hectares (ha) and Mykolaiv region on 900 ha, according to the Agrarian Policy and Food Ministry's press service.

The supply of spring crop seeds is 101% of demand, or 596,600 tonnes.

Farmers have got 648,000 tonnes of mineral fertilizers, or 69% of the needed amount (last year this indicator was 70%).

Farmers' demand for petrol and diesel fuel is met by 65%.

Winter crops, which were sown on 7.1 million ha, sprouted on 6.5 million ha (92%). Of them, 67% of the winter crops on 4.3 million ha are in good condition, 33% of the winter crops on 2.2 million ha are weak and thin, while crops on 80 ha were destroyed.

The ministry said that 8% of winter crops on 0.6 million ha did not sprout, and such fields are mainly in Poltava, Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv regions.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukraine plans to sow 26.7 million ha for the 2016 harvest, which is the same as in 2015. Grain crops are to be sown on 14.6 million ha, or 55% of areas under crops.

Spring crops are to cover 7.5 million ha, including 2.6 million ha under early grain crops.
