Russia promises to lower price of gas for Ukraine

The price of gas under a contract with Ukraine in the second quarter of 2016 will be below $180 per 1,000 cubic meters, which is lower than the price offered by Gazprom to Ukraine in the first quarter, according to Russian news agency TASS.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! UAA1 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"[It will] be lower than $180," Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said at a press conference on Friday, TASS said.

From April 1, the price of gas for Ukraine "will be in line with the current contract."

Novak said that he saw no sense in providing Ukraine a discount for gas, as the gas price is already low.

He also announced that his ministry had not received an official proposal to hold trilateral gas talks with Ukraine and the EU.

A discount on Russian gas set at $17.77 for the first quarter of 2016 expired on March 31, 2016.

The final price of gas for Ukraine in the first quarter was $212 per 1,000 cubic meters.

Oil and gas giant NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine said it did not plan to resume gas purchases from Russia's Gazprom.
