State-run company Ukrenergo, operator of Ukraine's power grids, plans to buy unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for detection of defects in transmission lines that are located in hard-to-access areas, the company's press service reported.
"It is planned that unmanned aerial vehicles and compact manned aircraft will be used to improve the performance of the overhead power lines (including early detection of defects) in hard-to-access areas (marshes, mountainous areas, water reservoirs, areas with agricultural crops and forests)," the company stated.
The aircraft will be equipped with video surveillance devices and thermal imaging cameras to monitor the operation of the power lines.
"To implement these measures the company plans to buy the appropriate equipment," the press service noted.
UNIAN's memo. National energy company Ukrenergo has operational control of Ukraine's integrated power grids and the main power transmission lines.
Last year, Ukrenergo posted a net profit of UAH 820.4 million compared with a loss of UAH 1.2 billion in 2014. Ukrenergo increased its net income for power transmission in 2015 by 76.4% compared with 2014, to UAH 5.433 billion.
