ASF cases reported in three regions of Ukraine

Veterinary specialists have recorded the outbreak of four new cases of an extremely dangerous animal viral disease – African swine fever (ASF) – in Ukraine, the State Food Safety and Consumer Protection Service reported.

The cases were recorded on August 9-11 in the farms of Mykolayiv, Odesa and Sumy regions, according to the report.

Two ASF cases were identified in Odesa region in the villages of Yasenevo-2 (Lyubashivska district) and Myrony (Balta district). In Sumy region, infected animals were identified in the village of Popivka (Konotop district), and in Mykolayiv region, ASF cases was recorded in Pidlisne (Novoodeskyi district). The cases were confirmed based on results of the analysis of dead animal tissue.

Veterinary specialists have identified the sites of a potential epidemic and are implementing measures to control and prevent the spread of the disease, the report stated.

As UNIAN reported earlier, a recurrence of ASF in Ukraine was recorded in 2014 (the previous outbreak was recorded in 2012). In 2015, 40 cases were reported. Till late July this year, ASF cases were quite rare. Since July 27, however, more cases have been reported, especially in Odesa and Mykolayiv districts, with the State Food Safety and Consumer Protection Service reporting six cases in Odesa region, three cases in Mykolayiv and one case in Chernihiv.
