Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman has urged the public to monitor the quality of road repairs carried out throughout the country and enabled local authorities to be involved in the road construction process.

"We are tackling a problem that has not been solved for years. But at least we’ve taken a big step towards improving the situation," Groysman wrote on Facebook.

"That is why decentralization has been implemented -- to enable city or village councils to make decisions concerning road repairs, and not officials in Kyiv. Thanks to decentralization, local authorities have been granted powers and significant resources. Therefore, hold them [local authorities] also accountable," Groysman posted.

"Perhaps for the first time we are able to see maps online of what road workers are planning to do and what has already been done. All those who provide fake reports should be held accountable," the prime minister said, stressing on the importance of the fact that changes have already started taking place.

As UNIAN reported earlier, in 2015, Ukraine's Infrastructure Ministry launched the decentralization of the road management system, leading to the transfer of local roads management to local governments.

According to Ukravtodor, at least UAH 60 billion is required every year for building and repairing roads in Ukraine. Over 90% of Ukraine's roads need repair or reconstruction.
