"The prices of the vegetables used for cooking Ukrainian borsch are low and they continue to decline. On average, the prices are virtually 67% down on the same period last year," economist from the Technical Cooperation Department of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Andriy Yarmak said.

During the previous week (from November 5 to November 11, 2016), the price of the so-called fruit and vegetable basket declined by 8.7% at once after a 3.8% decrease in the preceding week. Thus, in the two weeks, the cost of fruit and vegetables has already decreased by 12.5%.

For the first time in a long run, all the positions from the borsch kit became cheaper over the week. The sharpest downward trend was demonstrated by cabbage whose harvesting campaign is under way now. The price of potatoes fell by 7.4%. At this period of the year, the supply of this vegetable is traditionally higher than demand.

It is worth mentioning that the level of prices of all the borsch vegetables, including potatoes, is now very low, and producers do not profit from their sale. Therefore, the vegetables are sold only in case of significant need or under existing contracts.

The assortment of greenhouse vegetables also continued falling in price in the previous week, and again mainly due to the decline in the price of cucumbers. Low domestic and export demand amid growing shipments of low-priced greenhouse cucumbers from Turkey continued to put pressure on the market and forced local producers to lower their prices. Prices for greenhouse tomatoes remained unchanged. Prices of fruit were also stable, despite tough competition among citrus fruit suppliers on the Ukrainian market.
