Outbreak of African Swine Fever recorded in Odesa region

Veterinary experts have registered another case of a dangerous viral diseases of animals, African swine fever (ASF), in Saratskiy district of Ukraine’s Odesa region, the main directorate of veterinary medicine in Odesa region has told UNIAN.

"The death of 70 pigs was recorded," the vets said.

In order to prevent ASF spreading, containment measures are being undertaken at the location where the outbreak was recorded January 9 and confirmed the next day - at the premises rented by an individual entrepreneur in the territory of the former cattle farm, located in the village of Yaroslavka.

According to preliminary information, some 140 pigs were held at the location.

As UNIAN reported earlier, on January 8 another case of ASF was recorded in Kirovohrad region.

The number of outbreaks of ASF can be increased by 1.5 times - up to 117 cases. According to data from public sources, in 2016, 89 outbreaks of ASF were registered in Ukraine, including 5 cases in Kirovohrad region.

The virus is transmitted by direct contact between sick and healthy animals, through pork products, and also transmitted by ticks and transmitted mechanically (by vehicles during transfer of people and animals). There is no vaccines against the cvirus. Almost all of the population of infected pigs dies. The virus is destroyed by heating to extremely high temperatures.
