Ukraine boosts sunflower oil output by 20.2% in 2016 – statistics agency

Ukraine produced 4.4 million tonnes of crude sunflower oil in 2016, which was 20.2% up on 2015, according to the country's State Statistics Service.

In December 2016 alone, it produced 557,000 tonnes of sunflower oil, which was 5.3% up on the previous month and 47.8% up year-over-year.

However, production of margarine and edible fat shrank by 13.6% last year from 2015, to 184,000 tonnes, the statistics agency said.

The statistical report does not cover data from such temporarily occupied territory as the Crimean peninsula and the city of Sevastopol, and the zone in the east of Ukraine where the Anti-Terrorist Operation is under way.

Ukraine is among the world's largest exporters of sunflower oil. In 2016, sunflower oil exports from Ukraine totaled 4.8 million tonnes, which was 23% up on 2015, the Ukroliyaprom Association reported.

Sunflower oil shipments abroad in monetary terms were estimated at US$4.8 billion against US$4.2 billion in 2015.
