Poroshenko: Ukraine expects Finland’s principled position on Nord Stream-2

Ukraine counts on a principled position of Finland as regards the Nord Stream-2, involving the construction of the second string of a Nord Stream gas pipeline bypassing Ukraine, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said during a meeting with his Finnish counterpart Sauli Niinistö on his Finland visit, the Ukrainian presidential administration’s press service reported Tuesday.

"The so-called commercial attractiveness of the given project carries a number of political risks," Poroshenko said.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Russia's Gazprom, Shell, OMV, and E.On. in September 2015 signed a shareholders' agreement early on a joint project company, which will be engaged in the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Ukraine’s Prime Minister at the time, noted, if Russia and several Western companies built the Nord Stream-2, it would deprive Ukraine of a $2 billion profit, Slovakia - of $0.8 billion, Poland - of $0.4 billion, as well as deprive the EU of an actual energy independence.

Kobolev also predicted that with the implementation of the project, all entry points of the Russian gas to the EU would be almost entirely concentrated in Germany. However, the existing gas pipelines between Northern Germany and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe do not have enough capacity to deliver the necessary volume of gas to the eastern European regions.
