PM Groysman insists on reviewing nuclear energy development program

The Government should revise the nuclear energy development program in Ukraine until 2040, while the nuclear industry must also be assigned tasks for the next five years, Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman said during his visit to Khmelnitsky nuclear power plant, according to the Cabinet press service.

"At the same time, Ukraine should develop electricity export, selling it abroad, which would promote economic development and ensure energy independence,” the press service quoted Groysman as saying.

"Our task is to make Ukraine an electricity exporter. Ukrainian has a safe nuclear power industry, and today there is no risk to the system operations. We have increased the share of electricity produced by Energoatom's companies and we will do everything to have the system continue to work progressively. In this context, it is necessary to revise the nuclear power development program until 2040 and to provide medium-term objectives that should be addressed in the coming five years," Groysman said.

Once implemented, it will allow to increase the share of this type of energy in the overall balance from the current 8% up to 16%.

One of NPPs, in Zaporizhia, has six power units with a total capacity of 6,000 MW, making the plant Europe’s biggest. As of January 26, 12 of the 15 nuclear power units at NPPs across Ukraine are in operation. Nuclear power plants generate a total of over 250 million kWh of electricity daily.
