EU offers Ukraine alternative instead of Open Skies Treaty – Infrastructure Minister

The European Commission has advised Ukraine not to wait for the signing of the Open Skies Treaty with the European Union but to negotiate with each member state on a bilateral basis, Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Volodymyr Omelyan said on Ukraine TV Channel 24.

"In order not to wait, the European Commission has advised us to conclude bilateral agreements on the basis of the "Open Skies" provisions. This process is going in parallel lines, doing no harm. And it's working," he said.

Omelyan noted that the issue of Gibraltar, which is the subject of a dispute between Britain and Spain, remains unresolved.

A permanent dispute between Spain and the UK have led to the fact that a number of agreements, not only with Ukraine, but also with other countries, have been blocked," the minister added.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Omelyan said he expected to sign off the Open Skies Treaty with the European Union in 2017.
