Ukraine's state debt grows 8% to $71 bln in 2016

The total amount of public and publicly guaranteed debt of Ukraine at the end of December 2016 amounted to $70.97 billion, which is 8.3%, or by $5.47 billion, more than at the beginning of the year.

As reported on the website of the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine, the total amount of public and publicly guaranteed debt in hryvnia equivalent at the end of December amounted to UAH 1,930 trillion, which is 22.7% or UAH 357.58 billion more than at the beginning of the year.

The index of the national debt corresponds to limits laid down in the State Budget of Ukraine by the end of 2016 at the level of UAH 1.946 trillion.

Given the estimates of nominal GDP of Ukraine for 2016, released by the National Bank of Ukraine, at the level of UAH 2.358 trillion, the index of the national debt at the end of the year amounted to 81.8% of GDP.

Read alsoState Treasury reports 39% State budget surplus in Jan 2017According to the Ministry of Finance, in December, the amount of public and publicly guaranteed debt in dollar equivalent increased by 5.1%, or by $3.43 billion, while in the hryvnia equivalent it grew by 11.6%, or UAH 200.840 billion.

Previously, experts predicted that the index of the national debt of Ukraine for the year would reach 82% of GDP, while a third of the annual increase was due to the nationalization of Ukraine’s biggest bank, PrivatBank, whose additional capitalization was supported by the government that had issued domestic government bonds by UAH 107 billion.
