Another case of African Swine Fever recorded in Luhansk region

Veterinary experts have registered another case of a dangerous viral disease of animals, African swine fever (ASF), in Ukraine's Luhansk region, according to the press service of the State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection.

According to the report, the experts have recorded two infected pigs at the farm in the village of Bilokurakyne in Luhansk region. ASF diagnosis has been confirmed by laboratory tests.

In order to coordinate the response efforts, the State emergency anti-epizootic commission at the Bilokurakyne district administration adopted an action plan for ASF elimination and defined the boundaries of epizootic outbreaks, protection and surveillance zones.

According to forecasts of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Ukraine's losses due to the outbreak of ASF in 2017 could reach more than UAH 1.5 billion. The number of outbreaks of ASF can be increased by 1.5 times - up to 117 cases. According to data from public sources, in 2016, 89 outbreaks of ASF were registered in Ukraine, including 5 cases in Kirovohrad region.

The virus is transmitted by direct contact between sick and healthy animals, through pork products, and also transmitted by ticks and transmitted mechanically (by vehicles during transfer of people and animals). There is no vaccines against the virus. Almost all of the population of infected pigs dies. The virus is destroyed by heating to extremely high temperatures.
