It also defined the boundaries of epizootic outbreaks, protection zones and areas for monitoring.

Measures to contain and prevent the spread of the pathogen of ASF are now under way.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) forecasts that Ukraine's losses due to the outbreak of ASF in 2017 could exceed UAH 1.5 billion. The State Biosecurity and Consumer Protection Service projects that if ASF continues to spread, Ukraine will lose over 1.2 million pigs by 2020, or UAH 4 billion, and indirect costs may grow by UAH 5-7.5 billion.

UNIAN memo. African swine fever (Montgomery disease) is a contagious viral disease of domestic and wild pigs. The disease is no threat to humans. The virus is transmitted by direct contact between sick and healthy animals, through pork products, and also transmitted by ticks and transmitted mechanically (by vehicles during transfer of people and animals). There are no vaccines against the virus. Almost all infected pigs die. The virus is destroyed by heating to extremely high temperatures.
