NBU Governor Gontareva to leave post – media

After more than two and a half years of heading the National Bank of Ukraine, its Governor Valeria Gontareva has reportedly decided to resign, RBC Ukraine reported citing its sources from the circles close to the Ukrainian president.

This is not her first attempt to resign and, most likely, this time her request will be satisfied, the sources say, according to RBC Ukraine.

"The decision has been made, they are looking for a new [NBU] Governor," the publication cites its source as saying.

"The bench" of those who can replace Gontareva in the NBU is short. The list of candidates includes those who have long had high chances to be appointed, for example, ex-Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk. However, there are also some quite unexpected candidates, according to the report.

Despite the demands of the parliamentary opposition, rallies of depositors and problematic borrowers, and conflicts with the owners of banks, President Petro Poroshenko has not earlier submitted a proposal for Gontareva’s dismissal. This time, most likely, the president will satisfy the NBU chief’s request, according to RBC Ukraine.
