Foreign direct investment in Ukraine 17.1% up in 2016, to $4.4 bln

Foreign investors injected US$4.406 billion in direct investment (equity capital) in Ukraine's economy in 2016, which was 17.1%, or $642 million, up on 2015 when foreign direct investment (FDIs) made up $3.764 billion, according to the Ukrainian State Statistics Service.

Entities from 77 countries invested in Ukraine last year. Major investors accounting for almost 70% of total investment included Russia with $1.667 billion, Cyprus with $427.7 million, the United Kingdom with $403.9 million, the Netherlands with $255 million, and Austria with $249.9 million.

At the same time, FDIs injected by Ukrainian residents abroad in 2016 totaled $20.7 million, which was 25.8% down on 2015 when Ukrainian investment in other countries stood at $27.9 million.

In 2016, Ukrainian entities injected direct investment in 15 countries, most of the amount was invested in Cyprus, the Virgin Islands, Austria, and Russia.

The State Statistics Service says that its report does not include data from the occupied areas in Donbas, the Russia-annexed Crimea and Sevastopol.

As UNIAN reported earlier, FDIs in Ukraine in January-September 2016 totaled $3.801 billion, while disinvestment was estimated at $459.3 million.
