Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman says that his government is ready to take all measures within its authority against Russian Sberbank's Ukrainian subsidiary if facts of financing of terrorists from the self-proclaimed Donbas republics are established.
"I've talked to the president [Petro Poroshenko] and the governor of the NBU [National Bank of Ukraine Valeriya Gontareva]. If the information is confirmed, the NBU and the NSDC [National Security and Defense Council] will take all the necessary decisions, and they will be adequate. We will do what is needed from the government – we've found ourselves on common ground here, "Groysman assured.
Read alsoJournalist says Ukraine's chief banker allegedly lenient with Russian banksThe issue of possible sanctions against Sberbank of Russia was raised by Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, who mentioned a statement of the bank's management regarding the possibility of accepting passports issued by the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic ("DPR") and Luhansk People's Republic ("LPR").
Avakov called on the Ukrainian government to ask the National Bank of Ukraine and the National Security and Defense Council to impose sanctions on this bank.
The NBU responded to UNIAN's request, saying that that banks working in Ukraine are not allowed to work with clients bearing passports issued by the so-called "DPR"/"LPR."
Sberbank of Russia whose key owner is the Central Bank of the Russian Federation announced in turn that it strictly abides by international and Ukrainian laws.
Meanwhile, a rally against Russian banks in Ukraine was staged in Kyiv on Friday.
