Ukraine sees 80% rise in car imports in Q1

Ukraine saw an 80% rise in imports of passenger cars in the first quarter of 2017 (Q1) year-over-year (y-o-y), to 28,900 units, according to the Ukravtoprom Association's press service.

Car imports in the three months were estimated at US$416.9 million, while the average price of an imported car decreased by over $2,000, to $14,400, the association said.

"A significant change in the ratio of new and used cars has lowered the average cost of an imported car. The share of cars with mileage significantly increased compared with the first quarter of last year. If in 2016 they accounted for a mere 27% in total imports, their share hit 42% this year," the press service said.

"In the three months, German companies earned $101.1 million from shipments to Ukraine. However, the share of new cars in German imports was only 27%," the report said.

Japan ranked second in terms of car imports to Ukraine, the press service added.

"Japan, which shipped 3,208 passenger cars to Ukraine with a total customs value of $74.3 million, became supplier number two. New cars accounted for the lion's share of imports from Japan – it was 92%," the report said.

As UNIAN reported earlier, cars imports to Ukraine soared by 64% in January-February 2017 y-o-y, to 15,195 units, according to Ukravtoprom.
