Russian gas transit via Ukraine reaches 5-year high

Transit of Russian natural gas through the Ukrainian gas transportation system (GTS) for the first five months of 2017 has increased by 22% year-over-year (y-o-y), to 38.26 billion cubic meters, setting a record for the past five years, according to Ukrtransgaz, Ukraine's state-run gas transport system operator.

"The volume of transit of Russian natural gas through the Ukrainian GTS in the first five months of 2017 has increased by 22% y-o-y and by 64% compared to the same period in 2015. This is a record volume of transit over the past five years: it is almost 9 billion cubic meters more than the average volume of transit for January-May in 2013-2016," the report says.

"Thus, Gazprom has been covering the growth and fluctuations in demand for Russian gas in the EU countries primarily due to the use of the capacities and flexibility of the Ukrainian GTS," Ukrtransgaz said.

As UNIAN reported earlier, transit shipments of natural gas through the Ukrainian gas transport system in 2016 grew by 23% from 2015, to 82.2 billion cubic meters.
