Exports of live pigs for slaughter grew by 2.5 times in the first half of 2017, to over 1,500 tonnes, it said.

"Taking into account that imports for these groups of products lag behind the exports both in monetary and physical terms, Ukraine is becoming a stronger net exporter of pigs and pork. The main driver of this is demand from Georgia, which remains a major market for pork and is the only buyer of live pigs," the press service said with reference to Association analyst Oleksandra Bondarska.

"In addition to pork and poultry, foreign currency proceeds come from exports of pig offal, so the total inflow of foreign currency from exports of pig production is even greater," the press service added.

As UNIAN reported, pork exports from Ukraine in 2016 plunged by 88.3%, to 3,200 tonnes, while the exports in monetary terms decreased even more – by 90.7%, to US$5,100, according to customs statistics reports posted by the State Fiscal Service of Ukraine on its website.
