Estonia considers Russia’s Nord Stream 2 possible threat to Europe

The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project may have negative consequences for Europe’s energy security, Estonian foreign minister Sven Mikser told Germany’s Tagesspiegel, according to Europeiska Pravda.

"We cannot allow the supplier to use energy as an instrument of political pressure. Before the project is continued, we must analyze its consequences very thoroughly," said the foreign minister of Estonia, which is now chairing the EU Council, Europeiska Pravda reported referring to Tagesspiegel.

"If the analysis shows that Nord Stream 2 puts Russia in a position where it can pressure countries in Europe, such as Ukraine, we should take this very seriously," said Mikser.

As reported earlier, a number of European countries had opposed the construction of the pipeline, believing that it would make the EU hostage to Moscow. Earlier, President of the European Council Donald Tusk wrote a letter to the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, noting that the construction of Nord Stream 2 would strengthen Russia's position. Nord Stream -2 will concentrate the supply of Russian gas along a single route to Germany via the Baltic Sea starting 2020.
