Ukraine’s Centrenergo strikes deal on energy coal supplies from U.S.

The company concluded with the U.S.-based Xcoal Energy&Resources a contract for the supply of 700,000 tonnes of anthracite coal by year-end, Centrenergo CEO Oleh Kozemko said during the contract’s presentation at the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv on Monday.

"In the state of Pennsylvania, we visited five large coal mining enterprises. We negotiated with these companies. The best offer we’ve got from Xcoal ... The contract was signed for the delivery of 700,000 tonnes of coal before the end of this year," said Kozemko.

According to the official, the first batch of 85,000 tonnes should arrive at the port "Yuzhny" (Odesa region) in early September this year.

Answering the question about the price of fuel, Centrenergo CEO noted that the cost of each delivery will vary, adding that the price of coal for the first delivery is $113 per tonne.

A representative of Xcoal, Ernie Thrasher, has noted that his company is the largest U.S. coal exporter, adding that this is the first time that coal will come from the U.S. to Ukraine.
