Ukraine harvests 33.4 mln tonnes of grain as of Aug 8

Ukrainian agrarians harvested 33.4 million tonnes of grain on 8.8 million hectares (91% of the target) as of August 8 2017, according to the Agrarian Policy and Food Ministry's press service.

Early grain crops have already been harvested in Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhia, Kirovohrad, Mykolayiv, and Kherson regions.

The average yield of cereals is estimated at 3.79 tonnes per hectare, the report said.

At the same time, there were threshed 24 million tonnes of wheat from an area of 5.9 million hectares (92% of the target), 7.9 million tonnes of barley from 2.4 million hectares (94%), 313,000 tonnes of rye from 107,000 hectares (64%), and 183,000 tonnes of oats from 69,000 hectares (35%). The farmers also harvested 1.1 million tonnes of peas from 404,000 hectares, which accounted for 99% of the projected figure.

In addition, Ukrainian farmers continue to harvest rapeseed, having collected 2.1 million tonnes of this product from an area of 745,000 hectares (95%).

In general, early grain and leguminous crops are to be harvested in the area of 9.7 million hectares.

A total of 14.3 million hectares was sown by grain crops (including 7.15 million hectares – by winter crops). The total planting area for 2017 crops is estimated at 26.9 million hectares, which is 152,000 hectares more than in 2016.

Ukrainian farmers planted 8.1 million hectares of winter crops and green forage in 2016, which was 3.8% up against 2015. At the same time, the area for grain crops increased by 1.5%, to 7,200 hectares, the State Statistics Service said.
