Ukrainian banks post over UAH 5 bln in loss in H1

The total loss of all Ukrainian banks, including insolvent ones, was estimated at UAH 5.108 billion, or US$198.8 million, in the first half of 2017 (H1), which was by 44.8% down from the total loss at UAH 9.353 billion, or $364 million, year-over-year (y-o-y), according to the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU).

Ukraine's solvent banks received UAH 1.778 billion ($69.2 million) in loss over the period under review, while insolvent ones posted losses at UAH 3.331 billion ($129.6 million).

Some 18 out of 88 solvent banks completed the half year with a loss, including the major losses at Prominvestbank (UAH 4.720 billion, or $183.7 million), PrivatBank (UAH 2.908 billion, or $113.2 million) and VTB Bank (UAH 1.160 billion, or $45.1 million).

As UNIAN reported, the banking system of Ukraine in 2016 updated the historical maximum for losses, recording a negative result at UAH 159 billion. The total annual loss of the banking system, including both operating and insolvent banks, amounted to UAH 160.143 billion.
