"We cannot voice the runway construction cost without exact calculations while focusing on UAH 8 billion. Most likely, we'll have to get a loan, because we are unable to build the facility for our money within two construction seasons," he said at a press conference on August 18.

CEO of Ukrainian State Designing Technological and Scientific Research Institute of Civil Aviation Ukraeroproekt Kyryl Novikov said that the need to build a runway is caused by the growing passenger traffic.

"Today, the dynamics of passenger traffic at Boryspil airport is already clear. According to the development plan, the peak load for take-off and landing operations is up to 25 million passengers per year. This passenger traffic can be serviced with one runway. If the airport develops with such a dynamics, we will reach a peak of 25 million passengers a year over five years. In this case, it is necessary to use two runways," he said.

"It is necessary to start preparing the project documentation now. Two construction seasons for such an object will be enough. That is, if we proceed to the construction in two years, the runway will be ready before 2023," he added.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Boryspil airport received UAH 951.2 million ($37.3 million) in net profit in January-June 2017, which was 77.7% up year-over-year.
