Ukraine's Energy Strategy: boost of uranium mining, diversification of fuel supplies to NPPs

The Energy Strategy of Ukraine until 2035 approved at the government meeting on August 18 suggests the following goals in the nuclear energy sector: the increase of uranium ore mining, creating uranium concentrate reserves and further diversifying nuclear fuel supplies to Ukrainian nuclear power plants (NPPs), according to the press service of Nuclear Fuel State Concern.

"The Nuclear Fuel Sector's strategy section [of the Energy Strategy] defines the tasks of the Ukrainian nuclear industry until 2035. The primary tasks of the sector are to increase uranium and zirconium mining, prepare for the industrial development of deposits suitable for open operation, and develop explored deposits," the press service said on Facebook.

Read alsoCabinet approves Energy Strategy of Ukraine until 2035Also, the key tasks include further diversification of sources of nuclear fuel supplies, as well as exploring opportunities to create the capacities for manufacturing nuclear fuel and creating uranium concentrate reserves in Ukraine.

"It is advisable to expand the range of manufacturing of components, including from zirconium, for further development of the manufacture of nuclear fuel," the press service added.
