Ukraine ranks 12th in World Steel Association's steelmakers rating in July

Ukraine climbed from the 14th to 12th place in the international steelmakers rating compiled by the World Steel Association (WSA) in July 2017 despite the fact that Ukrainian metallurgy reduced steel production by 12.9% during that month year-over-year, to 1.810 million tonnes.

The July rating was topped by China with 74 million tonnes (10.3% up from July 2016). Other steelmaking nations included in the top 10 were Japan (8.6 million tonnes, 4.3% down), India (8.4 million tonnes, 3.5% up), the United States (7.1 million tonnes, 5.6% up), South Korea (6.2 million tonnes, 2.3% up), Russia (5.6 million tonnes, 8% down), Germany (3.5 million tonnes, 3.6% up), Turkey (3.3 million tonnes, 27.8% up), Brazil (2.8 million tonnes, 1% up), and Italy (2.1 million tonnes, 1.7% up).

The top 10 steelmakers in January-July 2017 were China with 491.6 million tonnes (5.1% up from the same period in 2016), Japan with 60.9 million tonnes (0.2% down), India with 58 million tonnes (5.4% up), the United States with 47.7 million tonnes (2.1% up), Russia with 40.93 million tonnes (0.5% down), South Korea with 40.9 million tonnes (3.5% up), Germany with 25.7 million tonnes (1.9% up), Turkey with 21.6 million tonnes (13.6% up), Brazil with 19.6 million tonnes (10.6% up), and Italy with 14.5 million tonnes (1.6% up).

In the seven months of 2017, all the 67 countries on the WSA rating increased total steel production by 4.6% year-over-year, to 977 million tonnes.

In January-July 2017, Ukraine remained 12th in the rating, having cut steel production by 15%, to 12.3 million tonnes year-over-year.
