Ukrainian farmers have completed harvesting of this year’s early grains and leguminous crops, having threshed some 37.3 million tonnes from an area of 9.6 million hectares, the press service of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine reported Monday.
Agrarians threshed 8.6 million tonnes of barley with an average yield of 34.3 centners per hectare (c/ha), 471,000 tonnes of rye at a yield of 28.3 c/ha, and 2.1 million tonnes of rapeseed with a yield of 27.6 c/ha.
At the same time, as of August 28, agrarians harvested some 26.6 million tonnes of wheat (with a yield of 41.8 c/ha), 487,000 tonnes of oats (25 c/ha), 1.1 million tonnes of peas (26.7 c/ha), 41,000 tonnes of buckwheat (10.8 c/ha), and 29,000 tonnes of millet (15.1 c/ha).
Read alsoUkraine’s agrarian SOEs report UAH 313 mln profit in 1H 2017According to the report, the best results were reported in Odesa (3.8 million tonnes of grains), Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv (2.8 million tonnes each), Dnipropetrovsk (2.6 million tonnes), Vinnytsia (2.4 million tonnes) and Mykolaiv (2.3 million tonnes) regions.
At the same time, the press service noted that 15 Ukrainian regions showed a record grain yield.
Farms in Khmelnitsky region reported a 56.6 c/ha yield, Ivano-Frankivsk – at 52.1 c/ha, Vinnytsia - at 50 c/ha, Ternopil – at 49.8 c/ha, and Chernivtsi – at 48.8 c/ha.
"Despite unfavorable weather conditions, the industry has reached high yields, for some types of grains - the highest over the years of independence. We maintain our previous forecasts for the harvest, which will fully ensure food security of the state and generate resources for exports, comparable to last year's," the press service quoted First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Maksym Martyniuk as saying.
The press service added that last year the agrarians reached the highest level of profitability among all branches of the economy (31.6%), while this season, given the gradual increase in world prices for agricultural products, there are reasons for maintaining high profitability of the agricultural business.
