Coal output in Ukraine shrinks by almost 10% in 8 months

Production of thermal and coking coal in Ukraine declined by 9.2% in January-August 2017 year-over-year (y-o-y), to 23.606 million tonnes, according to the Ukrainian Energy and Coal Industry Ministry's press service.

State-owned mines alone produced 3.1 million tonnes of coal of the total output, while coal production at the state mines fell by 20% over the period under review.

Some 2.6 million tonnes of coal was mined in Ukraine in August 2017, including 0.4 million tonnes produced at the state-owned mines.

In 2016, coal production slightly grew by 2.8%, to 40.864 million tonnes.

Hostilities in the eastern regions of Ukraine has caused a significant shortage of coal, primarily that of thermal anthracite produced in militant-controlled areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
