Naftogaz boosts gas purchases by almost a third in 8 months

National Joint-Stock Company Naftogaz of Ukraine in January-August 2017 purchased 15.6 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas, which was 3.5 bcm up year-over-year (y-o-y), according to the company's press service.

Gas imports accounted for 41% of gas purchased in 2017, while the share of gas bought from the state-owned Ukrgazvydobuvannia was 59%, the report said.

"Ukraine did not get gas from the Russian Federation in 2016 and 2017. All gas came from Europe," the press service said.

As reported, Naftogaz purchased 6.4 bcm of gas from the European market in the eight months of 2017, which was 2.9 bcm (83%) up y-o-y.

"This year, Naftogaz bought gas from 12 European suppliers. None of the said companies supplied more than 30% of the imported gas," the company said.

Naftogaz purchased 9.2 bcm of gas from Ukrgazvydobuvannia over the period under review against 8.6 bcm in 2016, according to the operational data.

Read alsoPM Groysman guarantees reform boost in NaftogazIt is noted that Naftogaz buys all commercial gas from Ukrgazvydobuvannia, except for volumes of production and technological costs used for the maintenance of own needs connected with extraction, preparation for transportation, and transmission of gas, as well used for production of liquefied natural gas and stable gasoline.

As UNIAN reported earlier, in 2016, Ukraine imported 11.1 bcm of gas from Europe alone. In particular, 9.1 bcm arrived from Slovakia, 1 bcm from Hungary, and 1 bcm from Poland.

Last year, Ukraine reduced its gas consumption by 4% against 2015, to 30.3 bcm. In late November 2015, Ukraine refused to purchase natural gas from Russia's Gazprom.

In general, the country doubled gas imports from Europe in 2015 from 2014, to 10.3 bcm, reducing the purchase of hydrocarbons from Russia by 56.5%.
