Washington bans U.S. citizens from participating in Russian energy projects

The U.S. Treasury on Tuesday, October 31, prohibited the provision, exportation, or reexportation, directly or indirectly, of goods, services (except for financial services), or technology in support of exploration or production for deepwater, Arctic offshore, or shale projects that could produce oil in Russia or its maritime area claimed by Russia, Deutsche Welle reports.

The U.S. Treasure in its Directive refers to the Executive Order of 2014 “Blocking Property of Additional Persons Contributing to the Situation in Ukraine" and to the Countering Russian Influence in Europe and Eurasia Act of 2017, DW wrote.

The new measure will apply to projects initiated on or after January 29, 2018.

Late September, the U.S. Treasury announced a set of new sanctions against Russia, which will enter into force late November 2017.
